Noise Pollution Tools
Spot Check Noise
Use a General Tools DSM403SD Sound Level Meter, a professional grade handheld sound meter for spot measurements. We also have a module on noise measurement using an iPhone app to check noise levels wherever you are without any special equipment. The NIOSH Sound Level Meter app, has been shown to be fairly accurate when a professional meter isn’t available. Unfortunately, there is no Android equivalent because there is too much variety in the cell phones’ mic hardware.
Track Air Quality Over Time
Our longer-term noise measuring kit follows the one used by the Beacon Hill Seattle Noise Measuring Project. It uses EPA-approved protocols to collect noise measurements over 3 days for a more comprehensive picture of a site’s noise exposure. This would be a great project for a whole neighborhood. Band together with neighbors an create a noise map for your neighborhood.
